Why People Listen but Do Not Follow Through?

Two people stand against a wall; one holds a newspaper, the other a tablet and coffee. Thai text on the image translates to "Why do people listen but not follow?"

Why People Listen to You but Still Do Not Follow Through

Many executives face the same problem. They communicate clearly, everyone nods, but when it is time to act, nothing moves.

.

A simple framework for identifying the root cause is Reason, Authority, Safety.

People may understand the logic, but still not feel that the change is worthwhile enough to alter how they work.

.

Or they may agree, but do not actually have the authority to decide. The budget, time, people, or scope may still be unclear, so they choose to wait in order to avoid making a mistake.

.

Most importantly, when the cost of failure is high, teams will nod to protect the relationship, but avoid taking action to protect themselves.

.

The result is slower decision-making, more rework, people doing the minimum to avoid criticism, and a system that depends on leader follow-up instead of being driven by shared standards.

.

So if your team is not following through today, is it because the reason is still unclear, the authority is still missing, or the safety is still not enough?
